The reports all seem to agree: the situation in Afghanistan is bad and getting worse. For Afghan photographer Zalmai , a native of Kabul who now lives in Switzerland, that assessment runs deeper than what much of us see on TV and in the news. Eight years after the world promised to rebuild his home, ordinary Afghans are losing hope. Last year, he traveled the country to see how regular Afghans were being affected. What he found, he says, was—and is—a humanitarian disaster: thousands displaced, unable to return to their homes, forced to settle in urban slums with little access to work, school or medical aid. This, he says, is the human cost of the war on terror. A selection of images:
