Getting out of a street gang in L.A. is about like getting a tattoo removed: slow, painful, scarring. It's possible--but far from easy. NEWSWEEK trailed two men, 29-year-old Gabriel Hinojos, and David Davila, 18, who are trying to escape gang life. That means resisting the pull of the old neighborhood to find jobs, mentors and, in many cases, have gang tattoos removed.
