As our first family searches for a pet, we’ve been bombarded with news of cuddly sounding puppy breeds. Labradoodles, puggles, yorkiepoos—what’s not to love? Plenty, as it turns out. A recent NEWSWEEK investigation found devastating conditions in commercial dog-breeding facilities, also known as puppy mills, in Lancaster County, Pa. The problem, however, isn’t limited to Amish and Mennonite country: it’s a nationwide epidemic. Take a look at America’s new puppy problem—and what’s being done to stop it.
