In the history of the U.S. Supreme Court, there has been a first Roman Catholic, Jewish, black and female justice. Now the first Hispanic may be added to the list. President Obama appointed Sonia Sotomayor on May 26, 2009. As an experienced prosecutor in New York City and corporate lawyer, Sotomayor has served 11 years on the demanding Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. As the replacement for retiring Justice David Souter, Sotomayor, if confirmed, would be only the third woman on America’s highest court.
