New York plays catch-up to greener cities with High Line project
New York City added another park to its extensive list Tuesday with the opening of the High Line on Manhattan’s West Side. The elevated park was reconstructed from a 1930s freight-train line and stretches a mile and a half through the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton-Hell’s Kitchen. The High Line showcases vegetation and architectural works, movable seating and public art.
Though the High Line is a good model for reuse of transportation structure, New York City is still several paces behind some of the nation’s other eco-friendly destinations. Last year, Popular Science magazine ranked the 50 greenest cities in the U.S. (New York came in at No. 20). A look at their top 10, and what makes them so environmentally friendly.
