People go to the movies to escape, but often what we see on screen is a reflection of our values and attitudes outside the theater. The portrayal of fat characters represents several archetypes, stereotypes, and beliefs about what it means to be overweight, and what role those who are fat should play in society. We asked Beth Bernstein and and Matilda St. John, who have written extensively about the intersection of fatness and pop culture, to explain what they tell us about how fat people are viewed by Hollywood and, by extension, society.
