For politicians, Twitter can be a high-stakes tool. It can help spread a political message or showcase a charming personality without relying on media coverage. It can also easily accentuate gaffes. Washington has been sluggish about adopting the art of the microblog; only about a third of Congress publishes tweets, according to congressional tweet tracker TweetCongress.org. Yet those who have embraced the platform are using it to good advantage. A look at the most powerful tweeters in public office.
