Skeptics were quick to cry "publicity stunt" after Colorado’s Richard Heene told authorities on Oct. 15 that he feared his 6-year-old son, Falcon, was carried away in a balloon (only to be found later--reportedly hiding in the family's attic). After three days, and one big TV slip-up by Falcon, Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden announced that Heene and his wife, Mayumi, will face felony charges for what the sheriff alleged was a hoax designed to get the Heenes their own TV show. Richard Heene had repeatedly denied a stunt was afoot, calling the accusations “extremely pathetic.” But with the felony charges, it's possible that the Heenes themselves may join an extremely pathetic pantheon: families involved in scams. We take a look at some of the most cringe-worthy.
