The best part about the new year is the perception that when the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31, a fresh start can begin. New calendar. New resolutions. New drive to leave the past behind and start anew. Of course, not everything gets left behind—one's cholesterol, credit score, and unanswered e-mails will still be waiting.
