“Do no harm” may be the foundation of all good medical and therapeutic practice, but sometimes that foundation isn’t quite solid enough. The case of Earl Bradley (pictured), a Delaware doctor charged with sexually abusing more than 100 children, is the latest in a string of recent incidents—from that of “sweat-lodge guru” James Arthur Ray to Dr. Conrad Murray, personal physician to Michael Jackson—in which officials have alleged that those trusted to treat our minds and bodies misled or harmed the patients who relied on them, whether through malice, negligence, or simple misguidedness. Here are some of the most notable cases of healers accused of crossing the line and treatments that went painfully, and even fatally, wrong.
