Photographer Paolo Pellegrin has "been to Gaza many times," he says, "and in December I focused on both the destruction of the physical landscape and on the survivors of Israel's military operation there in the winter of 2008-09. The kinds of wounds I saw would be terrible anywhere, but the conditions in Gaza are such that these sorts of injuries mean the victims' lives are now over in many ways. What's more, there's an increasing sense of isolation from the rest of the world. It's intangible, but there seems to be an understanding--a resignation, even--that conditions are not going to improve."
