If drug-addicted inmates get treatment for substance abuse, they are far less likely to end up in prison again, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Yet only about one in five addicted prisoners receives some sort of treatment, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. More states, though, are warming to programs like those at the Sheridan Correctional Center in Illinois, a dedicated center for treating prisoners with drug and alcohol problems. Nearly two years after it opened in January 2004, about 8 percent of convicts leaving Sheridan ended up back in prison, compared to a 54 percent recidivism rate statewide.
