In the movies, criminals get their snappy nicknames thanks to a signature calling card they leave at crime scenes--a mark of pride and a taunting clue for frustrated police. In real life, most bandits get their monikers from cops looking for catchy shorthand to describe distinguishing characteristics of the robbers. Those nicknames help generate media attention, which can lead to tips that aid in the investigation. Of course, the more ridiculous the disguise, the more appealing the nickname.
