It was an antitank mine: on patrol in Iraq, Army Maj. David Rozelle was blown up in June 2003. He lost his right foot. And when he was deployed again in 2005, to Tal Afar, he became the first amputee to return to active command in Iraq. Today, he's on his third deployment, stationed in Baghdad, and NEWSWEEK talked to him in late October. "Here I am, six years later, back in combat again," he says. It's not quiet: on the phone he reported that just hours earlier an IED had lit up the night sky. He and his soldiers had to get out and do the detective work that follows the mayhem. Here, Rozelle (right) is loading into a convoy to head out of Camp Victory.
