As the nuclear crisis in Japan comes closer to stabilization, the death toll from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami continues to climb. Some survivors have returned to see what is left of their homes and communities. About a half million people are seeking shelter in refugee camps where long lines form as relief teams work to distribute water and other basic supplies. Still, across Northern Japan, soldiers continue to pull bodies from the rubble. Photographer Q. Sakamaki, on assignment for NEWSWEEK, documents the devastation in northeastern Japan.
