Ariz. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was critically wounded in a shooting on Jan. 8 during an event in Tucson. She has spent the last 2 1/2 months in rehabilitation learning to speak, walk and care for herself. According to doctors, she has made significant advances. But they caution that injuries to the brain are complex and challenging and while some motor skills may be recovered, others may never be.
Photographer Charles Ommanney, on assignment for NEWSWEEK, captured the scenes in the Congresswoman's Washington D.C. offices where aides carry on her work. Pictured here is the hallway outside Giffords' office.
