Dark Passage

Europe has always been enticing for immigrants from the Middle East and Africa, but recent wars and conflicts have turned that steady flow into a gusher in the last few months. These refugees face a series of harrowing obstacles in their journey: ruthless and costly human traffickers, perilously ill-maintained and overfilled boats, scant opportunities and a threat of arrest upon arrival. In this week’s NEWSWEEK, Barbie Latza Nadeau examines the plight of the more than 45,000 immigrants who have entered Europe through the Italian town of Lampedusa since January. Photographer Alex Majoli went to Italy on assignment for NEWSWEEK to depict refugee life.
