After decades of civil war, on the backs of motorcycles and overburdened Land Cruisers, Sudan’s displaced children are coming home. On July 9th, South Sudan is poised to become the world’s newest country, and the young adults who fled war and conflict will now be part of building a new state. In this week’s NEWSWEEK, Laura Heaton reports on the way these young people are doing their part in the run-up to independence, and photographer Sarah Elliott documented the sights of the capital city of Juba.
