Reliving History: All-Surface All-Stars
Fred Perry, September 1936
As the U.S. Open plays out over the next two weeks, all eyes will be on Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams as they fight for the final Grand Slam title of the year. To celebrate, Newsweek replays covers of tennis greats. Among them: Fred Perry, the first to win all four Grand Slam singles titles; Bobby Riggs of the famous “Battle of the Sexes” with Billie Jean King; and two who hold records for the most U.S. Open wins—Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe.
