Witchcraft, the stuff of fairy tales and children’s costumes in many parts of the world, remains a real and present concern in others. In northern Ghana, superstition remains strong, with women—and some men—forced to flee their homes after allegations they used their “juju.” These outcasts take refuge in witch camps, which provide a safe harbor but little more in the way of amenities, writes Sophia Grove in this week’s edition of NEWSWEEK International.
