Photographs by Alex Majoli
Alex Majoli has been a full-time photojournalist for the past 25 years, capturing scenes of peace and war around the world. Recently he traveled to Libya on assignment for Newsweek to document the country’s transition to life without Gaddafi. He brought back a striking portfolio of images like this one, showing just a small part of the former Libyan leader’s sprawling home and headquarters, Bab al-Azizya. Now covered with graffiti and stripped of anything portable, the place has become a kind of unsupervised theme park where Libyans gather on weekends to gawk, mingle, and savor the unaccustomed joys of liberty.
