When we first set foot in Detroit, we had planned to document, as photographers, the bewildering disappearance of the city’s structure. The tales of modern-day ruin were very much on our minds. But Detroit decided to reveal itself on its own terms.
Its derelict streets were filled with thousands of items, including letters, family albums, Polaroids, prints of photographic evidence, and mug shots. Humbled and overwhelmed by such discoveries, we felt we were left with no choice but to listen to Detroit’s anguished voice and compile these vivid “documents” into the book Found Photos in Detroit.
