Syria’s revolution, which initially started as a nonviolent protest movement, has turned bloody as the regime cracks down and takes military action against civilians who oppose President Bashar al-Assad. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the death toll has already reached 30,000. Almost 300,000 Syrians have fled the country, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that the number will rise to 700,000 by the end of this year. For those who stay, food shortages, the threat of airstrikes, and disrupted public services are part of day-to-day life. This summer, photographer Daniel Etter captured images of the daily life of Syrians enduring the chaos.
