The National Football League agreed Wednesday in court to make an open-ended commitment to pay cash to retirees who suffer from diseases linked to concussions. In August, the league agreed to pay $765 million to settle a suit brought by some 5,000 retired players. A judge rejected the proposal, saying there would not be enough money to cover all the claims over the 65-year life of the settlement. If the judge approves the open-ended settlement, it will be allocated to 18,000 retired players and their beneficiaries, who must vote to approve, object, or opt out of the settlement.
