The Border Patrol has apprehended more non-Mexicans (257,000) than Mexicans (229,000) at U.S. borders this year, according to new data gathered by the Pew Research Center. In 2007, the number of captured Mexican immigrants totaled 809,000, while non-Mexicans detained was at 68,000. “The recent increase in non-Mexican apprehensions is due in part to a surge in unaccompanied Central American child migrants crossing the border without their parents,” Pew said. “By contrast, the number of unaccompanied Mexican children apprehended slightly declined.”
