Government wiretapping has always been in a legal gray area, and now the National Security Agency has admitted that it stepped out of bounds in recent months. The scale of intercepted emails and phone conversations "went beyond the broad legal limits established by Congress," government officials told the New York Times. The problem is rooted in the new guidelines established last year, which changed the legal grounds for intercepting communications. Because of this, an "overcollection" has occurred, though the details of exactly who the NSA spied on is unclear. It would appear lawmakers are not safe from Big Brother, either. The NSA attempted "to wiretap a member of Congress, without court approval, on an overseas trip."
