Get to work, auto industry: President Obama announced a new agreement on Friday that seeks to dramatically improve the fuel efficiency of cars in the U.S. The deal, which was struck between the White House, automakers, and the state of California, calls for cars to have a fuel economy of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. It’s said to save on fuel costs and reduce oil consumption by 2.2 million barrels per day by 2025. Obama said, “This agreement on fuel standards represents the single most important step we’ve ever taken as a nation to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. We’ve set an aggressive target and the companies are stepping up to the plate.”
