"This is not over," said President Obama in a short statement on Hurricane Irene Sunday afternoon. The president offered his condolences to those who have lost loved ones and also addressed the storm's aftermath, which has left millions without power and caused significant flooding in areas up and down the East Coast. Power outages continue to be another serious risk. The Federal Emergency Management Agency held a press conference with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, and National Hurricane Center Director Bill Read early Sunday to provide updates on the storm and ongoing relief efforts. While the worst of the storm has passed, flooding, downed trees, and power outages still pose a threat to communities. As of Sunday, the Associated Press reported a total of 18 deaths due to the storm.
