President Obama will request a record $708 billion to fund the Defense Department in 2011, plus an additional $33 billion to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan this year. The move will likely expose a split between the White House and Democratic leaders battling a public that has grown increasingly disgruntled with the wars. The extra $33 billion on this year's tab will go toward the expansion of the war in Afghanistan, which includes the 30,000-troop bump to the region that Obama ordered late last year. After hitting up Congress for cash this month, the Obama administration will present the Quadrennial Defense Review to lawmakers on or before Feb. 1. The Review is an important part of U.S. military doctrine and will outline military objectives for the next four years, which include expanding the pilotless drone programs used for surveillance and attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
