One of the first officers to arrive on the scene of Wednesday’s mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, said he saw “pure panic” on the faces of victims as police stormed the building. “It was unspeakable, the carnage we were seeing,” San Bernardino Police Lt. Mike Madden told reporters Thursday. Syed R. Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, opened fire on the Inland Regional Center during a holiday party, killing 14 people and wounding 21 others with an arsenal of weapons and explosive devices they reportedly had amassed at their nearby residence. Madden added he had to pass “people obviously in great amounts of pain” as he looked for the shooters. The “goal was to find the shooter or shooters... we had to bring some kind of calm to the chaos,” he said.
