Pakistan’s main spy agency says Islamist militants now pose the biggest threat to national security, according to a senior officer in a finding that could have major ramifications for India-Pakistan relations. It was the first time in 63 years that the Indian army wasn’t thought to be the biggest threat to Pakistan. “That's a remarkable change,” said Bruce Hoffman, a counterterrorism specialist and professor at Georgetown University. “It's yet another ratcheting up of the Pakistanis' recognition of not only their own internal problems but cooperation in the war on terrorism.” Indeed, the assessment may change Pakistan’s tune on the war in Afghanistan, because they’ve long believed that India is attempting to gain influence there to position itself against Pakistan. The U.S. could benefit from increased Pakistani action against militants along the Afghan border—a key to winning the Afghan war.
