U.S. government officials have admitted that Raymond Davis, the American arrested in Pakistan after shooting two men at a crowded traffic stop, was—as Pakistan officials alleged—spying on militant groups in the country as a clandestine operative in the CIA. He also formerly worked for Xe, the controversial American defense contractor formerly known as Blackwater. Davis' arrest and detention, which came after American officials described the shooting as self-defense in response to a failed robbery, has revealed a secret war run by the CIA in Pakistan. The discovery of Davis' identity has exacerbated already tense relations between the U.S. intelligence agency and its Pakistani counterpart. Without any reference to Davis' intelligence affiliation, President Obama made a public plea for his release last week. Since the American military is largely restricted from entering Pakistan, the CIA has expanded its role in the country, operating armed drones and running covert operations.
