Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo may still be unaware that he has won the Nobel Peace Prize. His wife was expected to tell him the news on a visit to his jail cell, but she has since “disappeared,” according to her lawyer. Activists are concerned that Liu Xia—whose mobile phone has been cut off—has been removed from Beijing by Chinese authorities, who have been known to hide political critics on sensitive occasions, or even imprison them. “We’re very concerned that the government might use this as a pretext for detaining her,” said a representative from Freedom Now, a Washington-based group that acts as Liu’s counsel.
