South African photographer Anton Hammerl has been killed in Libya, his family said on Facebook Thursday. Hammerl, who was reported missing over a month ago, was killed April 5 by Col. Muammar Gaddafi’s forces. Hammerl’s family said the photographer had been shot in an “extremely remote location” and was injured so critically that he “could not have survived without medical attention.” The statement said Libyan government forces had promised they were holding Hammerl, although it turned it out he had been killed. “It is intolerably cruel that Gaddafi loyalists have known Anton’s fate all along and chose to cover it up,” his family said. Hammerl, who had also covered the violence in South Africa before the first post-apartheid election, is survived by his wife and newborn son.
