War for the Planet of the Apes dethroned Spider-Man: Homecoming for the No. 1 spot in theaters this weekend. In its opening weekend, the third installment in the Apes series raked in $56.5 million domestically. Spider-Man trailed behind in second place with $45.2 million in its second weekend. War for the Planet of the Apes, like its predecessors Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, was met with high marks by critics, with a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film by 20th Century Fox, the latest reboot of the original 1968 film, tells the origin story of how apes battle an army of humans to take over the planet. Andy Serkis stars as the leader of the apes, who faces off against Woody Harrelson as the ruthless colonel leading the humans.
