The trial on the constitutionality of Proposition 8 begins Monday in federal court. San Francisco and lawyers defending the ban on same-sex marriage are urging the U.S. Supreme Court to prohibit video coverage. The attorneys argued that if coverage of the trial is posted on YouTube as planned, their client's right to a fair trial would be "jeopardized," and that it "has the potential to become a media circus.” U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker already agreed to limit television coverage, but said taped proceedings will be made available to YouTube at the end of the day. More than 140,000 people opposed to Prop 8 signed a petition asking for coverage, arguing that the "outcome will affect millions of people, and it's the American Way to open the judicial process to the public." This trial could catapult the gay-marriage issue to the U.S. Supreme Court.
