Libyan rebels have fought in the past few weeks to overthrow Col. Muammar Gaddafi, but one of the fiercest battles may be to find their own focus beyond the shared goal of ousting the dictator. While suffering military setbacks in Zawiyah and Ras Lanuf, the opposition council’s leaders contradicted each other publicly Tuesday as some called for foreign intervention and others warned against causing a humanitarian crisis. Mustafa Gheriani, an acting spokesman for the rebels, said the fractions have arisen because they can't focus on creating a provisional government. “Things are moving too fast,” Gheriani said. The rebels fought to survive Tuesday as fighting intensified in some the previous strongholds as their army used outdated weapons against Gaddafi’s powerful force. And the opposition has no clear leader, as spokeswoman Iman Gugaighis summed up: “We didn’t have any authority, we gave ourselves authority.”
