Is hacking the new "new" thing? Aaron Swartz, a former fellow at Harvard's Center for Ethics and founder of the social-media website Reddit, has been accused of hacking MIT's computers. Swartz, 24, allegedly stole millions of scholarly reports from MIT's network last year with the intent of leaking them online. A federal indictment filed today charges him with wire fraud, computer fraud, and property damage. The political activist, who founded Demand Progress, pleaded not guilty. The executive director of Schwartz's nonprofit organization equated the arrest to "trying to put someone in jail for allegedly checking too many books out of the library." If convicted, Schwartz faces as many as 35 years in prison.
