Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin reportedly requested a government plane for his honeymoon to Europe over the summer. According to ABC News, the move prompted an “inquiry” by the Treasury Department’s inspector general. But the request was reportedly dropped after officials determined it wasn’t necessary. An Air Force spokesman said the planes could cost around $25,000 per hour to operate, and Mnuchin’s net worth is reportedly around $300 million. “You don’t need a giant rulebook of government requirements to just say yourself, ‘This is common sense, it’s wrong,’” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, told ABC News. A Treasury spokesman said Mnuchin made the request because “it is imperative that he have access to secure communications” as a member of the National Security Council. Mnuchin’s wife, Louise Linton, came under criticism—and later apologized—last month for posting a photo of her deplaning a government jet using hashtags for designer brands.
