The Venezuelan government quickly suppressed an “uprising” attempt by a group of soldiers at a military base against the country’s president, Nicolas Maduro, in the northwestern city of Valencia. Diosdado Cabello, the deputy leader of the ruling Socialist Party, called the incident a “terrorist attack,” and the military said it was a “propaganda show.” In a video, a member of the uprising, calling themselves the 41st Brigade, says, “this is not a coup” and “we demand the immediate formation of a transition government.” The U.S. has slammed the Maduro government in recent days over an election held last weekend that was widely criticized as a sham and an attempt by Maduro to hold onto power.
