Two blasts from the past lit up the Tampa stage before Paul Ryan: former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and 2008 Republican candidate for president John McCain. Rice and McCain both spoke about foreign policy at the Republican National Convention, although they paid scant attention to the Afghan war and the Iraq war. McCain argued for more invention in the Middle East, saying that Obama is withdrawing from Afghanistan too quickly while also ripping the president for foreign-policy leaks. Rice, meanwhile, said that the U.S. allies “must know we are reliable and consistent and determined.” Rice received one of the loudest welcomes so far at the convention—fueling speculation that she is planning a 2016 run.
