Turns out mad scientists do exist. Canadian authorities discovered this week that in July, an entrepreneur chartered a fishing boat and scattered 100 tons of iron dust into the sea in an ecological experiment. The man did not have oversight from any governmental or academic authorities and even managed to trick the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration into lending him ocean-monitoring buoys. Authorities in Canada are currently investigating, with scientists hoping that ecological damage from the experiment is minimal.
