Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Sunday night that his country is open to a prisoner swap with the United States, in an interview with CNN. Three Americans, including a Washington Post journalist, a former Marine, and a pastor are being held in the Islamic Republic. In return, Iran wants the U.S. to free 19 of its citizens—many of whom have been held in connection with sanctions on the country’s nuclear program. AFP warns that Iran’s judiciary could be reluctant to back Rouhani’s overtures, instead preferring to back the country’s hardliners.
