According to sources close to the incident, Rutgers officials knew of coach Mike Rice’s abusive behavior long before their November 26 viewing of the now-ubiquitous video of him physically pushing players. An upperclassman—who remains anonymous—approached the school’s officials early in 2012 to report the suspicious behavior. According to a 50-page report compiled for Rutgers, athletic director Tim Pernetti was so cognizant of the abuse that he had personally chastised Rice, sat in on his practices to monitor him, and even mandated he see Rutgers’s sports psychologist. Pernetti was forced to resign as athletic director on Friday after the startling video exposed the cover-up.
