With a one-paragraph order on Friday night, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to block same-sex marriages in Florida, allowing the marriages to begin after January 5. Florida’s ban on gay marriage was previously ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge, but that ruling was placed on hold until after pending appeals. “This is a thrilling day for all Florida families,” American Civil Liberties of Florida attorney Daniel Tilley said in a statement. “As we explained to the court, every day that the ban remains in place, couples are suffering real harms. We are grateful that the court recognized that, and that as a result, those days are finally coming to an end.”
