A New York Times investigation into SEAL Team 6, the Navy’s secretive military organization, paints a portrait of the group as both soldiers and spies deployed perhaps too frequently in the U.S.’s global manhunts. More SEAL Team 6 members have died in the years since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 than in the entire history of the organization, the newspaper reports. And concerns over excessive killings have sprung up as, among other incidents, “even an American hostage freed in a dramatic rescue has questioned why the SEALs killed all his captors.” Former Senator Bob Kerrey told the paper he thinks the team and other Special Operations units are overused, saying, “They have become sort of a 1-800 number anytime somebody wants something done.”
