After an epic war of rhetoric and a temporary deal keeping the government on life support for two weeks, Senate Democrats have finally released their own budget proposal. It includes $6.5 billion in budget cuts, which the senators called “prudent cuts that will allow the government to meet its obligations to the American people, while sparing our economy from further damage at a time of great uncertainty.” They also assailed the budget passed by House Republicans, calling its $61 billion in cuts “simply irresponsible, made in order to meet an arbitrary number used as part of a campaign promise." Neither the House bill nor the Democrats’ new bill is likely to actually pass the Senate, but the failure will allow both parties to tell their constituents they did all they could before accepting an inevitable compromise.
