Adnan Syed may have gotten a boost in his fight for freedom for a person familiar to Serial listeners: Asia McClain. She stated in her letters to Syed in 1999 when he was first imprisoned that she was with him during the time Maryland prosecutors accused him of murdering Hae Min Lee. The 33-year-old McClain submitted an affidavit reitterating she was with Syed from 2:20p.m. until 2:40 p.m. on January 13, 1999. According to the state’s timeline, Lee was dead by 2:36 p.m. In her affidavit, McClain rejects prosecutor Kevin Urick’s claim that she recanted what she said in her letters to Syed and only wrote them under pressure from his family. “I never told Urick that I recanted my story or affidavit about January 13, 1999,” the new affidavit states. “What actually happened is that I wrote the affidavit because I wanted to provide the truth about what I remembered. My only goal has always been to provide the truth about what I remembered.”
