A 50-year-old man died after being severely bitten by a shark at Byron Bay, one of Australia’s most popular beaches. The man, who has not yet been identified, was found with a bite so bad that part of his leg was missing and later found floating in the surf. “I saw what looked like seaweed but it was blood in the water,” said Mark Hickey, who tried to pull the man out. Those on the beach dragged the man to shore, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. No lifeguards were on duty during the attack because it was the week before they begin their seasonal duties. A beachgoer said there wasn’t much alarm after the attack, as there were “still heaps of surfers in the water.”
