Bard at times Oxford: Derek Walcott, a Nobel-Prize winning poet, has withdrawn himself from consideration as the university’s poetry professor due to allegations of sexual harassment. The allegations came from a campaign in which packages containing documents incriminating Walcott were sent anonymously to dozens of academics. “While I was happy to be put forward for the post,” Walcott said, “if it has degenerated into a low and degrading attempt at character assassination, I do not want to be part of it.” Walcott’s withdrawal has left only two others in the running for the professorship, but Oxford has refused calls to postpone the decision as a result of the scandal.
